Midsomer Norton Pride - The Winning Bake

Posted on 18th June 2018

Saturday 16th June saw the 3rd Annual Midsomer Norton Pride Bake Off, and the second to be sponsored by FDC Law.

The event was one of a number organised for Pride, including panel discussions,  a film night, the bake off, and an evening event. In addition, organisers have been working with local schools to put together videos.

The Bake Off took place at Norton Town Hall. There was an excellent turn out, for what was a fun and family-friendly event.

The cakes entered were of very high standard, and included two cakes which were Vegan, one which was gluten free and once baked to show the colours of the Bi flag!

Judging was carried out by Norton’s Mayor, Cllr Paul Myers, with Pride organiser Nikolas Jovcic-Sas, Gorgeous Drag Queen Meth, and special guest judge from Stonewall

The Bake Off winner was Tilly Walters, who embraced this year’s theme of ‘unicorns’ with a stunning carousel cake – a vegan, lemon and elderflower cake, with home-made lavender infused shortbread, and a vegan meringue topping.

After the judging and presentation of prizes, all of the cakes were shared -those we tried were delicious!

Marjorie Taylor, FDC Law Partner, said “We have a strong history of involvement in our local communities, providing support and sponsorship for a wide range of groups, form the Rugby and Cricket Clubs, to music and arts festivals. We feel that Pride, and the local LGBTQ community, are another important part of our wider local community, and are very  happy to be involved again.  While most organisations will pay lip-service to being inclusive, we feel that actions speak louder than words. We’re already looking forward to next year’s bake off!”

After the judging, Cllr Paul Dacre spoke briefly to congratulate the winners, and to speak about the importance of the work which Norton Pride is doing, and sought volunteers for a local advisory committee,  and  all attendees got to enjoy glasses or bubbly (or cups of tea) and cake, to live music by local band the Ramshackle Orchestra.

In the evening, following the Bake Off, there was a party, which, in light of the World Cup, had a Russian Theme – ‘Putin on the Ritz’ , and was hosted by Drag Queens Meth and Donna Trump.

A good time was had by all!
